Classification of insulated and sheathed cables

Dec 04, 2024

1. Classification by sheath material
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) insulated and sheathed cables: This is the most common one. The PVC sheath has good chemical corrosion resistance, wear resistance and certain flexibility. It can effectively prevent the cable from being affected by external chemicals and mild mechanical damage.

Rubber sheathed cable: Rubber sheathed cable has excellent flexibility and elasticity. Natural rubber sheathed cable can maintain good performance in low temperature environments and will not become brittle like some plastic sheaths.

Metal sheathed cable: Like copper sheathed or aluminum sheathed cable, it has good shielding performance. It can effectively prevent external electromagnetic interference and also prevent internal signals from radiating outward.

2. Classification by insulation material
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) insulated and sheathed cable: Using PVC as the insulation material, its dielectric loss is small and the insulation performance is stable. In combination with the PVC sheath, the overall performance is balanced, suitable for general low-voltage (such as 380V/220V) electrical equipment connection and power transmission, and is widely used in power lines in homes, shopping malls and other places.

Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated sheathed cable: XLPE insulation has excellent electrical properties such as high breakdown strength, low dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent. It has good heat resistance and can withstand higher operating temperatures, thereby increasing the current carrying capacity of the cable. It is mainly used in medium and high voltage power transmission lines, such as underground cables in urban power grids.

Rubber insulated sheathed cable: Rubber insulation materials have good elasticity and flexibility, and are less affected by temperature and environment to a certain extent. Closely combined with the rubber sheath, it can provide better protection performance and is often used in occasions such as internal electrical circuits in automobiles and charging cables for mobile devices that require high insulation and flexibility.

3. Classification by use
Power cable: used to transmit electric energy, it must meet the transmission requirements of high voltage and high current. Its insulating sheath can ensure the safe and efficient transmission of electric energy, and is used in power transmission lines from power plants to users.

Control cable: used to transmit control signals, focusing on anti-interference and signal accuracy. Its insulating sheath will use shielding materials to connect controllers and other equipment in industrial automation control systems.

Communication cable: used to transmit voice, data and other information, with high requirements on bandwidth, signal attenuation and anti-interference performance, used for telephone, network, cable TV and other communication lines.
